Projects

The Provenance Lab is currently engaged in two research projects.

The first analyzes the provenances of thousands of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Modern paintings, and is called Modern Migrants: Paintings from Europe in US Museums. As part of the project, we needed to answer the simple but pressing question: what is a painting? We thus created the website, www.whatisapainting.com, which helps us to understand the full variety of artistic responses, from watercolor on canvas to oil on asbestos!

The second research project the Provenance Lab is currently part of is PAESE 3.0, itself part of the Lower Saxony Scientific Space Provenance and Collections Research Digital (ProSaDi). PAESE 3.0 explores the extent to which the transformation of colonial and postcolonial museum provenance information into Linked Open Data (LOD) can enable the cross-collection analysis of colonial power relations between territorial expansion and epistemic (non-)knowledge about “objects” and collections across institutions and countries.
